Intensive Green Roofing

In Partnership With Zinco

When most people think about intensive landscaping they think of well-kept gardens on used roof areas. However, with the relevant ZinCo system superstructure, you can achieve almost anything you want.

The “Heather with Lavender” System – The Ideal System for Blooming Perennials and Fragrant Herbs

Unlike the “rooftop garden” or the “landscaped underground garage”, where garden centres’ whole product ranges can be used – subject to the habitat in question – ZinCo provides the “heather with lavender” system with the plants included. Along with low-growing sedum species, the “Heather with Lavender” plant community also contains fragrant herbs and small shrubs like thyme, oregano, and lavender. The “heather with lavender” system substrate, which has been especially designed for this plant community, combines with the Floradrain® FD 40 water retention and drainage elements to create the necessary habitat conditions. This means that,  in comparison to rooftop gardens with regular plants and higher substrate layers, the “Heather with Lavender” system requires only moderate levels of care and maintenance.

The “Summer Plains“ System – The Low-Maintenance Alternative to Lawn

Depending on the amount of watering and fertilizing the system “Summer Plains” allows different kinds of vegetation – either a durable lawn or a flowering meadow with a varity of herbs providing natural habitat for birds and insects.

The level of water consumption with “Summer Plains” is considerably lower due to its plant types and the new irrigation method with Aquatec® AT 45. Another advantage is that it is no longer necessary to fill the drainage elements. The basic principle involves the distribution and retention of water in the element cells. The water is fed through drip lines and is drawn upwards through the wicks incorporated into the wicking mat where it is available to the substrate.

The build-up can be used on flat roofs, sloped roofs (up to about 5° pitch) and even on inverted roofs.

The “Rooftop Garden” System – You Can Create Almost Anything You Like

The “rooftop garden” green roof system is a multifunctional green roof build-up with high water retention capacity – for lawns, perennials and, on deeper substrate layers, for shrubs and even trees. It can also be combined with other functions, e.g. with paths, terrace areas, driveways or playgrounds. As a substructure for driveways or foundations, Floradrain® FD 60 – the core element of the green roof system – can even be filled with concrete; without penetrating the roof skin and without impairing the drainage. The drainage flow rate meets the requirements of German building standard DIN 4095.

The System Build-Up with Protectodrain® can turn Underground Garage Roofs into Parkland

The “rooftop garden” system can also be applied on underground garage roofs, including the possibility of dam-up irrigation. Underground garage roofs’ good accessibility and typically high-load bearing capacities means that, on these surfaces, it is possible to use a build-up on which you can spread the substrate by means of wheel loaders.

Fully laid Protectodrain® drainage elements with attached rubber protection mat on underside protect the waterproofing from all sorts of mechanical stress during the constructions stages and later on, when covered with the TG stiff filter sheet, they ensure a safe drainage of excess water. Together with ZinColit® and the various ZinCo system substrates, the construction offers a wide range of possibilities when it comes to planting and design.

Urban Rooftop Farming

The number of densely populated urban centres is increasing. More than half of the world’s population now lives in towns or cities, where undeveloped or green spaces are seldom to be found. Green roofs, as a counterbalance to this, have made the breakthrough in such densely-populated areas. It comes as no surprise¸ therefore, that roof areas are used for the production of fruits, vegetables and herbs.

However, in order for market gardening to actually work in an extreme location such as a roof, all relevant factors must be taken into consideration. ZinCo has, therefore, developed the system build-up “Urban Rooftop Farming” as a permanent reliable solution. The drainage element Floradrain® FD 40 is at the heart of this build-up. With 20 cm ZinCo system substrate, this build-up is suitable for fruit and vegetables such as lettuce, onions, herbs, zucchini, eggplant, squash, cabbage, melons, strawberries and such like. For vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, green beans, raspberries, blackberries, currants and such like a substrate depth of 28 to 40 cm is recommended.
